Ocular Irritation Assays
The location and the anatomy of the eye predisposes it to exposures of a variety of environmental conditions and substances each day. Ocular injury from a variety of chemical exposures can lead to a range of adverse effects with the most extreme being blindness.
Ocular irritation assays offer a wide range of alternatives to the Draize Rabbit Eye Test for predicting the ocular irritation/toxcity potential of test materials. Each ocular in vitro assay is unique in terms of its sensitivity and its compatibility with specific test materials. The anticipated aggressiveness and/or physio-chemical properties (e.g., solubility) of the test material are often considered when determining the most appropriate assay to use. Specialized protocols may be prepared as requested through consultation with an IIVS Study Director.
